Despite the good will of everyone involved, seeking ethical approval for a qualitative study can be a challenging process. Criteria that are applied to quantitative studies do not always work well for qualitative studies. For example, ethics committees may require informed consent for participant observation in public settings, which is not feasible. Co-creating research together with participants is also a common practice in qualitative research, but may equally be seen as problematic from the perspective of the quantitative research that ethics committees usually deal with. To discuss such issues, the Qualitative Research Group organizes a panel discussion with four representatives of ethics committees: Wouter Kruijne of Psychology (Fac. BSS), Klaas Wardenaar and Annet ten Brug of PEDON (Fac. BSS), Leonieke Bolderman of the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, and Matt Coler of Campus Fryslân.
