Insider-outsider supervision

Over half a year ago, the QRG organized a session on insider/outsider research. The topic led to a nice exchange, and we will revisit this gripping theme in October from a slightly different angle: How to navigate doing ‘insider’ research with an ‘outsider’ supervisor. In this session, our speakers will be Lely Safrina and Karra Sulaiman Kurdi. Both are from Indonesia, and are doing PhD research into the Indonesian context. Lely and Karra both have Dutch supervisors, and have to navigate cultural differences and tensions in their supervisory relationship. Karra’s supervisor, Brenda Bartelink, will contribute to this session from the point of view of supervisor. Their unique positioning and experiences will make for an interesting discussion session, where the speakers invite all your comments and questions! We hope that a lively exchange about this topic can help to foster an inclusive international university environment.
